The Evolution of Laptops

Laptops have become part and parcel of every home and business. That is mainly because of the portability this offer. Most of the people take its form factor, design, and portability for granted. Instead, the laptops have to pass many transitions to reach this stage. After the invention of the computer, portability emerged as one of the main issues in their use. To overcome this issue, the manufacturing companies began working on it. Every passing year is bringing a lot of changes in their form factor, design, and portability. Nowadays, these laptops have even transformed into notepads, tablets, and chrome books. The evolution of laptop can be divided into two stages.

Period from 1975-1995

The IBM 5100 portable computer is thought to be the beginning of laptops. The businesses were demanding portable computers to fulfill their needs of activities. Thus, in September 1975 IBM brought its first portable computer to the market. This computer weighed about 25KG was easily portable through a carrying case. It had a 5-Inch display and 1.9MHz IBM Palm Processor. These were not the laptops but were computers with a feature of portability. Then, in 1982 Compaq brought its portable computer with 9-Inch CRT display. This was also a portable desktop computer but with a weight less than IBM 5100. It weighed around 12.5 KG and ran on MS-DOS. The system had a hard drive of about 10MB.
Apple computers also brought their first portable computer in 1989. This was the computer with active matrix display and long battery life. This computer gave us the idea of modern laptops. The bulkiness of this computer remained a problem. The introduction of Power Books 100 in 1991 brought the laptops in the mainstream. This was the first system to use a trackball instead of a track pad as an input device. Thus, these computers resemble a lot with modern laptops.

Period from 1995 Onward

The invention of Power Books brought about a revolution in the world of laptops. Power Book 500 was the very first laptop like a computer. By the year 2000, the laptops became as powerful as desktop computers. Many businesses began replacing old desktops with laptop computers because of the portability these offered. The year 2007 brought Net Book from Asus, but just after two years, it stopped due to criticism on its being underpowered. In the year 2010, the invention of Apple iPad became the cause of the emergence of modern laptops.
Nowadays, laptops have the almost same configuration like desktop computers but with refined battery backup and increased portability. Modern laptops have 2-3KG weight and more than 15 hours of battery timing. The increasing use of laptops is still bringing a lot of changes in these laptop systems.
One thing surprising here is that these laptops are also gradually losing their importance with the invention of modern mobile devices. These devices are equipped with more innovative features and also have surpassed the laptops both in RAM and ROM. However, laptops are strictly recommended for power users.
